Tom Creeden and I started Tropical Computers in 1992. We’re proud to say that our company has had a major influence on the way many Interiorscape businesses prepare proposals for existing and potential clients. We were able to harness the power of the modern day computer so that a proposal or bid could easily be converted from a full page of plant names and dollar signs into a visual rendering of the work to be done, quickly and efficiently. This was quite a large step in the early and mid 1990’s when we were starting the business. At first the Interiorscape Industry thought we were crazy because the technology was so new and the equipment was so expensive. Digital cameras, inexpensive inkjet printers and laptop computers weren’t a reality at that time and a typical desk top computer cost several thousand dollars.
Well, we have all come a long way since then! The technology has continued to become more and more affordable. For many people their cell phones take reasonably good photographs or video. There are lots of technology options available today that allow you to use computer technology. It is still amazing, however, how many people have continued to resist using computer imaging as part of their everyday business. During these tough times it is important to use every available tool to keep current customers and to attract new ones. During times of economic stress, getting customers to pay for landscaping services is difficult. One way to break through the economic barrier is to show the prospective customer what the installation will look like. We are living in a visual world in which many people do not read, but in which everyone likes pictures.
Often the person you are in contact with is not the decision maker. You might very well have a good relationship with this person and feel you are near to closing the sale, only to find out that the real decision maker has vetoed the purchase. A rendering of the actual job goes a long way toward connecting with the true decision maker, even though you may never meet this person. The current and future generations of business people are more and more technically astute. The youngest ones are growing up with technology. They will be your future customers. It’s time to get in the game. Digital cameras, computers and design software are at all‐time lows with regard to cost. With the exception of the design software, most people already have the other tools necessary to do computer imaging. For the non‐technical person, learning to do designs is not rocket science. It is relatively easy to do and after a few hours of practice you can produce designs that will have a positive effect on your business. There are few other investments that you can make in your business that can result in a positive return as quickly and inexpensively as computer imaging. In most cases, the first job you get due to having superior visuals as part of your proposal can pay for the entire investment and then some. It sounds crazy…but we hear this over and over!
There are many benefits for your clients by having plants as part of their indoor environment. None is more obvious, however, than the beauty that your goods and services provide. It is an old cliché that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, but if the beholder never gets to see the beauty, how can they decide whether to hire you or not? Whether you are a large or small company it’s time you took a look at this valuable and inexpensive technology.
